Continuing our preview of the Fit Out or Refurbishment Over €10 category of the upcoming Irish Construction Excellence (ICE) Awards, sponsored by Surety Bonds, this week we look at Brewery Quarter Counting House – a new multi-use development situated in a magnificent riverside location in the heart of Cork City.

Dating back to 1792, The Counting House (formerly Beamish & Crawford brewery) has been at the heart of Cork’s medieval quarter for generations.

Carefully conserved yet creatively reimagined, this iconic new development has sustainability at its core, proudly celebrating Cork’s rich history and providing an innovative, reimagined space for future generations to flourish with perfectly aligned working, cultural and retail spaces.

For contractor BAM, The Courting House was an extremely challenging and complex yet highly rewarding project, as they worked to maintain the Courting House’s design integrity and quality. With a conservation approach that put the historic structure first, BAM proved that intrusive works can be carried out without risking the existing fabric, and have delivered a symbolic building back to the city of Cork. The iconic Tudor style frontage has been retained as well as internal features which nod to the building’s history, such as copper brewing tuns.

Facing onto the magnificent River Lee, Counting House has stunning riverfront views, and the project will see the opening of new footpaths, providing optimal footfall and seamless pedestrian access. A new passageway connecting South Main Street with Crosses’s Green will create a bridge between Cork City’s East and West, while a state-of-the-art Events Centre and Student Accommodation facilities complete this vibrant new cultural quarter.

With a footprint of almost 90,000 square feet The Counting House has a host of built-in amenities, offering sleek and spacious office spaces to rent. As a LEED certified building, sustainability has been one of the core principles at the heart of this project.
