Medical research laboratories at The Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland:
The Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland has played a major role in the education and training of medical professionals in Dublin since its foundation in 1784. In 1810, the Surgeons Hall opened on St. Stephen’s Green with further buildings extending the campus over the centuries including on York Street in 1976 and more recently in 2018. The RCSI continues to be one of the country’s leading providers of professional medical education programmes and certified training courses.

Murcom has extensive experience in medical and laboratory works both in hospitals and 3rd level institutions having undertaken upgrade works in St. James’ hospital, The Royal College of Surgeons In Ireland and Trinity College.

These works required deeper levels of specific expertise and an even greater commitment to collaboration and teamwork with Mechanical and Electrical Consultants.

Established in 2009 and having attracted a team with decades of experience, Murcom have the knowledge and resources to undertake such complex projects.

The renovation and refurbishment of multiple research laboratories at the College, included demolition works, reconstruction and renovation. Existing labs were stripped and new medical research suites were constructed to include Cold Rooms, Tissue Culture suits, Cytotoxic and Instrument rooms along with laboratory prep area which included 12 fume Cupboards, offices and write-up spaces. The development was carried out while the College was open to staff and students, functioning as a place of training and education, and all within the halls of a significant listed building.

With the project on-going through these restrictions, the 5 storey, 1800 sq. m. project, was expertly completed by the main contractor, who also looked after Mechanical & Electrical coordination and were Project Supervisors at Construction Stage.

The mixed-use nature of this project, along with the difficult site conditions coupled with the tight programme all contributed to the complexity of the project.

Fitzsimons Doyle and Associates acted as Lead Consultants/ Consulting Engineers/ Project Managers/ Architects/ Assigned Certifiers/ and PSDP for the renovation and refurbishment.
